Introducing the Sensible Premier Membership

Sensible Premier offers psychiatric care in a fundamentally different way with priority access, care coordination, concierge pharmacy, and in-home blood draws.

After nearly three years of brainstorming and building partnerships, we're introducing Premier. It represents the standard of psychiatric care patients deserve.

People seeking mental health care already carry enough weight. The last thing they need is a system that adds friction, confusion, and delay. Yet every day, patients describe the same stories: weeks-long waits for appointments, surprise policy changes at clinics or pharmacies, prescriptions stuck in limbo, and endless hoops just to maintain stability. Healing is hard. Navigating a broken system makes it harder.

Sensible Mental Health was built as a direct response to that reality. From day one, our mission has been simple: remove as many barriers as possible between people and the care they need. We operate on collaboration, transparency, and trust. Care should feel supportive and predictable, not adversarial or bureaucratic.

This month, we’re taking that commitment one step further.

We are introducing the

           Sensible Premier Membership

, a premium tier of care designed for people who want the highest level of access, coordination, and convenience. Nearly three years in the making, it was shaped by clinical standards, legal regulation, and carefully chosen partnerships with the goal of offering more collaboration and trust in your health care.

Premier is for people who want psychiatric care that runs smoothly, end to end.

Like our existing Essential Plan, Premier includes:

            All appointments

            All communication

            One transparent monthly price

But Premier goes further. It removes friction from the entire care experience.

           Priority Appointment Access

When you need care, timing matters. With Sensible Premier, you’re offered a follow-up appointment within three business days of your request. No long waits. No uncertainty. No destabilizing gaps in care.

           Concierge Pharmacy

We’ve partnered with St. Paul Corner Drug to create a pharmacy experience that is fundamentally different from what most people are used to. This is not just medication delivery. It’s a tightly coordinated system designed to remove delays, surprises, and administrative headaches.

           Premier members receive:

Home delivery of medications or optional in-person pickup in St. Paul if you need something sooner

A dedicated pharmacy team that actually picks up the phone if you call

Transparent medication pricing passed directly to your monthly invoice

            Streamlined paperwork

            No long hold times

            No lines

            No guessing games

What makes this work is how deeply the pharmacy experience is integrated into your care.

           True convenience

           .
From your appointment to medication on your doorstep, the process is designed to be effortless. Need a medication urgently? You can pick it up directly in St. Paul. Traveling and need an early refill? Just let us know and we’ll make it happen. No explaining your situation to multiple people.

           Coordinated billing and administration.

If you’re tired of filling out the same forms over and over, you’re not alone. We built a system that minimizes duplication. Sensible Premier members receive one streamlined invoice that includes both your membership and your medication charges. We bill the card on file. Clean. Predictable. Efficient.

           Transparent medication pricing.

You’ll know the approximate cost of your medication ahead of time.

           Or now

. No insurance maze. No calling around. No showing up to a surprise charge at the counter. Predictability matters when you’re managing ongoing care.

A relationship between provider and pharmacy

           .
This is the part most healthcare systems never get right. Sensible has a direct working relationship with St. Paul Corner Drug. That means:

If they have a question, they call Sensible.

If we see a potential problem, we call them directly.

You'll have fewer delays, errors, and far less burden passed to you.

You are not the middleman. You don’t have to manage the logistics of your own care. That’s our job.

This isn’t “concierge” for show. It’s concierge because the system is one coordinated team working on your behalf.

           Care Collaboration

Mental health doesn’t exist in a silo. With Premier, your psychiatric provider can virtually join your therapy or medical appointments when coordination matters. That means:

            Better alignment between providers

            Fewer conflicting recommendations

            A truly integrated treatment plan

This is what collaborative care should look like.

           In-Home Blood Draws

Some psychiatric medications require regular lab monitoring. Premier members can receive in-home blood draws, removing another major point of friction. No lab waiting rooms. No rearranging your schedule. No unnecessary stress.

The Sensible Premier Membership isn’t about luxury. It’s about reliability. It’s about respecting your time, protecting your stability, and treating mental health care with the seriousness it deserves.

Premier was built for people who are done tolerating inefficiency in healthcare. It’s for people who value access, coordination, and follow-through. For people who want their care to feel as thoughtful and professional as the rest of their lives.

This is psychiatric care designed around the patient, not the system.

Refills get delayed. Insurance rejections don’t make sense. Being told a prescription is out of stock or that it expired, even when you know it shouldn’t have. What should be a routine errand can turn into a stressful, time-consuming ordeal. And when it comes to psychiatric medication, those delays aren’t just frustrating—they can put your stability and well-being at risk.

It’s important to say this up front: Most pharmacists and pharmacy staff are doing their very best. They’re often kind, capable, and just as frustrated as you are. The real problem is that they’re being asked to do too much—filling more prescriptions, giving more vaccines, and handling more insurance roadblocks—while being paid less and less by pharmacy benefit managers. It’s a broken system, and patients feel the consequences.

At Sensible Mental Health, we believe helping you navigate these barriers is part of good psychiatric care. With more than a decade of experience, we’ve learned how to anticipate the hiccups and smooth them out before they derail your treatment. Sometimes that means recommending an independent pharmacy where the staff have a little more time to focus on you. Sometimes it means suggesting you pay cash for a medication if we know insurance is likely to cause delays (and many prescriptions are far more affordable than people expect when paid directly). And sometimes it means calling the pharmacy during your appointment, clarifying the details, and confirming the medication will be ready when you arrive.

Our goal is simple: To keep your care consistent and predictable so you don’t have to carry the stress of managing it alone. If something goes wrong at the pharmacy, you’ll never be left without support. At Sensible, your calls, texts, and emails get answered promptly. We’ll troubleshoot together and figure out the fastest way forward.

Medication management shouldn’t feel like a maze. While we can’t fix the entire pharmacy system, we can make sure you don’t have to navigate it by yourself. At Sensible Mental Health, we believe good psychiatric care is not just prescribing appropriate medications thoughtfully, but helping you actually get the medication you need—on time, every time.

Why I Treat Survivors of Gun Violence

Seventeen years after my own loss, I’m committed to helping others heal from theirs.

For the last few years, my professional biography has included this line: I am particularly drawn to treating survivors of gun violence.

I can’t say it has sparked conversations or directly brought in clients. But it matters to me. It’s a way of signaling to people who have endured unimaginable pain that I see them.

Because I am one of them.

When my sister was murdered in 2007, my family was swallowed by grief—and simultaneously lifted by an outpouring of support. Professors, pastors, police officers, therapists, neighbors—helpers of every kind—showed up for us in those dark moments. Their presence shaped me. As a college senior at the time, I knew I wanted to spend my career becoming that kind of helper for others.

Last month’s school shooting at Annunciation Church brought that history rushing back. Sirens screamed past our house for 45 minutes straight, police cars flying faster than I’d ever seen. My wife and I had already heard: there had been a shooting just blocks away. We waited, heart in our throats, for news about families we love—families with children in that school. Within the hour, we learned our closest friends’ kids were safe. Others would not be so fortunate.

I still remember the cool October night when police and a chaplain knocked on my family’s door to tell us my sister Katherine was gone.
She thought she was meeting a single mom who needed a babysitter. Instead, she encountered a 19-year-old man with a gun.

Just as we were then, the Annunciation families are stunned now. Asking the same impossible questions: How could this happen? Why does it keep happening?

In our home, Aunt Katherine is still very much present. My children, now 6 and 8, ask about her passions—her love of travel, her joy around kids, the aunt she might have been. They also ask how she died. They probably hear more about gun violence than most kids their age. But this is our reality. And now, heartbreakingly, it’s the Annunciation families’ reality too.

This time I didn’t lose a sibling. But I grieve for the kids who lost friends, for the parents who lost children, for the community so brutally violated. They have joined a club no one wants to belong to: Murder Victim Family Members.

In the 17 years since my sister’s death, I’ve worked to equip myself with the skills to support others in their darkest moments. From seeking my own mental health care to training as a nurse and then as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I’ve built both the personal and professional foundation to be one of the helpers I once needed. When the right person comes across that line in my biography, I hope they’ll see it not just as words—but as an invitation to healing, empathy, and hope.

In today's healthcare landscape, a harsh reality persists—many individuals are shouldering the burden of paying for all their care out of pocket. All health-related expenses, throughout the entire year, are often funded directly by the patient. When we consider that 32 percent of Americans have some form of public health insurance, it becomes apparent that the

are likely to bear the brunt of several thousand dollars in healthcare expenses before insurance contributions kick in. Deductibles, the out-of-pocket amount individuals pay before insurance coverage commences, have steadily risen over the past two decades, rivaling the costs of 1-3 months of housing.

The evolving nature of healthcare expenses can be challenging to grasp, especially for those who grew up in the era of minimal out-of-pocket costs. The paradigm has shifted, and today, people are confronted with significantly higher out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. Individuals often desire health insurance to cover routine health costs, but it functions more like auto insurance.

Much like we price shop for gas and oil changes, it's time to make asking questions about the cost of healthcare the new norm. Blindly trusting major insurance providers might not always be in your best interest. Studies indicate that negotiated insurance rates are the best price only about

. Surprisingly, paying in cash, whether through HSA, FSA, credit card, check, etc., is often less expensive. Many clinics now offer cash prices at discounted rates, providing an attractive alternative to using insurance.

Practices like Sensible Mental Health are using a unique approach. By pricing their services and passing along administrative savings to clients, they eliminate the administrative burdens associated with insurance. Cash-pay models are gaining traction in psychiatry, primary care, rheumatology, orthopedics, dermatology, and various other specialties, offering cost-effective alternatives for those willing to forego insurance.

Beyond the Buzzword: Unraveling the Misuse of 'Bipolar' in Mental Health Conversations

This post explores the misuse of "bipolar" in mental health discussions, distinguishing it from clinical Bipolar Disorder. Delving into alternative explanations, it highlights PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder, ADHD, and ineffective coping as possible contributors to observed behaviors.

In mental health appointments, discussions about relationships often take center stage. Whether clients are recounting interactions with friends, experiences with romantic partners, or relevant family mental health history, a diverse array of behavioral descriptions emerges.

Frequently, individuals use the term "bipolar" to depict someone with two dimensions to their behavior. Despite being a diagnosable mental illness, it seems that people view the term as fitting for someone whose mood is variable, volatile, and reactive. Occasionally, the word is employed to characterize an individual lacking self-control at a perceived clinical intensity. However, it's important to note that these attributes are not the defining characteristics of Bipolar Disorder.

Let's delve deeper into what Bipolar Disorder truly entails and explore the potential disorders that individuals using the term "bipolar" might be referring to.

Formerly known as manic-depressive illness, Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder marked by extended periods of deep depression and episodes of elevated mood. These elevated moods, referred to as mania or hypomania, can persist for several days to weeks and encompass heightened energy levels, reduced sleep, irritability, risk-taking, and impulsive behavior, as outlined in detail by the

Crucially, it's essential to understand that the duration of manic or depressive episodes associated with Bipolar Disorder spans days, not hours. This distinction is where confusion often arises. Observing a family member whose mood fluctuates rapidly throughout the day may prompt the thought, "Something is not right," and in some cases, this intuition may be accurate.

Given that intra-day mood variability is not a typical presentation of Bipolar Disorder, it's worthwhile to consider alternative explanations for reactivity, intense emotions, and poor self-control:

Individuals grappling with traumatic experiences may exhibit emotional volatility and reactivity. Understanding the impact of trauma is crucial in providing effective support.

Little research exists on the topic of post-SSRI sexual dysfunction, yet some cases have been reported. Many confounding variables contribute to sexual dysfunction.

           The NY Times

published an article addressing the increasing number of people grappling with sexual dysfunction, including decreased libido, genital sensation, erectile dysfunction, or the inability to orgasm. Many attribute these issues to past use of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs). While it's widely known that certain SSRIs can induce such side effects during medication use, little information exists regarding their long-term impact on sexual functioning.

The author conducted interviews with people attributing their symptoms to SSRIs, as well as several experts, to explore various perspectives on the issue. Numerous anecdotal reports recount difficulties in regaining interest or sensation after discontinuing medications like Celexa, Zoloft, or Prozac. Vague warnings from health organizations in Europe and Canada acknowledge the potential for long-term sexual dysfunction resulting from SSRIs.

In my daily practice of prescribing SSRIs, I routinely discuss sexual side effects or the potential for such effects with many clients. While some experience no sexual side effects, many find resolution after discontinuation and trying a different SSRI. Some people, faced with the symptoms of depression or anxiety, opt to endure the side effects temporarily. Notably, none of my clients have reported ongoing sexual side effects from SSRIs after they've stopped medications in this class.

As I delved into the article, a recurring thought emerged: Determining whether an SSRI causes sexual side effects, such as decreased interest or inability to orgasm, is not a straightforward assessment while the medication is being taken. This complexity is compounded after the medication is stopped. I recall instances where I changed a client's SSRI due to a sexual side effect, only to discover later that confounding variables such as medical comorbidities, trauma resurfacing, stress, psychological discontent, or relationship discord were the actual culprits. Achieving sexual gratification, navigating relationships, and cultivating self-love are intricate processes.

-SSRI sexual dysfunction, coupled with the myriad of alternative causes of sexual dysfunction, are not likely to significantly influence decisions to initiate or discontinue an SSRI. I don't see this shifting the needle towards people not using SSRIs. Nevertheless, the relatively high incidence of sexual side effects
